Deviations from passive evolution - Star formation and the UV excess in z ∼ 1 radio galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Galaxy colours are determined for two samples of 6C and 3CR radio sources at z ∼ 1, differing by a factor of ∼ 6 in radio power. Corrections are made for emission line contamination and the presence of any nuclear point source, and the data analysed as a function of both redshift and the radio source properties. The galaxy colours are remarkably similar for the two populations, and the UV excess evolves with radio source size similarly in both samples, depsite the fact that the alignment effect is more extensive for the more powerful 3CR radio galaxies. These results seem to suggest that the alignment effect at these redshifts does not scale strongly with radio power, and is instead more closely dependent on galaxy mass (which is statistically comparable for the two samples). However, it is likely that the presence of relatively young ( ∼ < several 10 years old) stellar populations has considerably contaminated the K−band flux of these systems, particularly in the case of the more powerful 3CR sources, which are ∼ 0.5mag more luminous than the predictions of passive evolution models at z ∼ 1. The higher luminosity of the 3CR alignment effect is balanced by emission at longer wavelengths, thereby leading to comparable colours for the two samples.

Galex Observations of “passive Spirals” in the Cluster Cl 0024+17: Clues to the Formation of S0 Galaxies
We present new results from deep GALEX UV imaging of the cluster Cl 0024+17 at z ∼ 0.4. Rest-frame far UV emission is detected from a large fraction of so-called “passive spiral galaxies” –a significant population which exhibits spiral morphology with little or no spectroscopic evidence for ongoing star formation. This population is thought to represent infalling galaxies whose star formation h...
متن کاملLy α excess in high redshift radio galaxies : a signature of star formation . ⋆
About 54% of radio galaxies at z >3 and 8% of radio galaxies at 2. z <3 show unusually strong Lyα emission, compared with the general population of high redshift (z &2) radio galaxies. These Lyα-excess objects (LAEs) show Lyα/HeII values consistent with or above standard photoionization model predictions. We reject with confidence several scenarios to explain the unusual strength of Lyα in thes...
متن کاملConstraints on Dusty Star Formation at High Redshift from Ultraviolet, Far-infrared, and Radio Surveys
If high-redshift galaxies resemble rapidly star-forming galaxies in the local universe, most of the luminosity emitted by their massive stars will have been absorbed by dust and re-radiated at far-infrared wavelengths that are largely inaccessible to ground-based observations. The bolometric luminosity produced by star formation in distant galaxies must be estimated indirectly through empirical...
متن کاملStar Formation and Dust Obscuration at Z ≈ 2: Galaxies at the Dawn of Downsizing*
We present first results of a study aimed to constrain the star formation rate and dust content of galaxies at z≈2. We use a sample of BzK-selected star-forming galaxies, drawn from the COSMOS survey, to perform a stacking analysis of their 1.4 GHz radio continuum as a function of different stellar population properties, after removing AGN contaminants from the sample. Dust unbiased star format...
متن کاملar X iv : a st ro - p h / 99 12 19 6 v 1 9 D ec 1 99 9 Statistical properties of local & intermediate z galaxies
Galaxy evolution during the last 9 Gyr is discussed. It can be traced back from well known present-day galaxies or directly observed for galaxies at different look back times. This requires clear and consistently matched selection criteria for galaxy samples. There is a net decrease of rest-frame, UV luminosity density, at least since z = 1. It is interpreted as an important decline of the star...
